Mystery
The Mystery of the Missing Alpaca is an exciting treasure hunt across our property, filled with escape room-style challenges. Do you dare to solve this mystery together?
Why did we choose alpacas?Waarom hebben jullie gekozen voor alpaca’s?
That’s a question we’re often asked. So, let’s start at the beginning. We are Jos and Lilian van Vijfeijken. For 15 years, we worked with love on our dairy farm in Mariahout, until we decided in 2015 to completely change direction.
The following year, we opened our glamping site and caravan storage: Mariahout In de Hei. At the time, there were still young cows on the farm, which we cared for on behalf of someone else. This allowed our glamping guests to enjoy animals on the property.
That winter, we used the quiet months to bring our next plan to life: a bed & breakfast and a meeting venue. We opted for an industrial interior design with subtle nods to the barn’s original function.
Eventually, the young cows left, and the barn stood empty. It quickly became clear to us that animals should return. We were immediately taken by alpacas. They are intelligent, quirky, gentle by nature, and true herd animals. That’s why we chose alpacas!
We immersed ourselves in the world of alpacas and followed a training course. We purchased thirteen alpacas from a breeder: six young males, three young females, and four pregnant females. The barn was immediately adapted for its new residents. We loved smelling fresh hay and straw on the land once again.
Since then, two crias (baby alpacas) have been born, and we’re now focusing on breeding. We also plan to explore the possibilities of working with alpaca wool. We organize walks so guests can meet these animals and experience their remarkable wool for themselves.
After a calming walk with the alpacas, you can unwind at our location. In De Oude Veldschuur (the old field barn), relax and enjoy a cup of coffee with homemade cake.
The alpaca
Like the dromedary, llama, guanaco, and vicuña, the alpaca belongs to the camelid family. These animals originate from South America, mainly Peru, Chile, and Bolivia, but are now found all over the world.
There are two types of alpacas bred for their wool: the Huacaya and the Suri. Huacayas have dense, soft fleece that grows upright and gives them a teddy bear appearance. Suris, on the other hand, have silky, lustrous wool that forms long, dreadlock-like strands hanging down their bodies.
